The Domain Name Lifecycle
Understand registration, renewal, expiration, grace, redemption, and deletion stages.
A domain registration moves through stages such as active use, expiration, possible grace or redemption periods, and eventual deletion. For generic top-level domains, ICANN describes a typical lifecycle, but the exact schedule and options depend on the registry, registrar, and domain ending. An expiration date is not a guaranteed public release date.
During an active registration
A registrant normally renews through the registrar before the term ends. Registration data may show creation, updated, and expiration events. The last-updated field might reflect an administrative change rather than a renewal. Status codes can restrict transfers, updates, or deletion, so read them separately from dates.
Set renewal reminders and keep registrar account access secure. If the domain supports an automatic renewal setting, verify that payment details and notices work rather than assuming it is fail-safe.
After expiration
A registrar may offer an auto-renew grace period; later, a redemption period may allow restoration for a fee. A pending-delete stage may follow before a domain becomes available again. These are not promises that every domain follows the same timeline. Country-code endings and special registry policies can differ substantially.
A website stopping after expiration also does not prove deletion. DNS or service suspension can happen while the registration still exists.
What to check when timing matters
Look up the domain at /whois and note the status and event dates together. For your own domain, confirm the authoritative renewal state directly in your registrar account. For a domain you hope to register, check a registrar's live availability and be prepared for changes. Do not infer that a public expiration timestamp entitles you to the name.
