How to Check Domain Availability

Check a domain name through registration data and understand uncertain results.

To check whether a domain can be registered, search the exact name and extension, then confirm the result with a registrar before buying. DNS alone cannot answer the question. A registered domain may have no website or DNS records, and a missing DNS name is not proof that registration is open.

Search the exact candidate

Enter a complete name such as yourname.example at /domain, replacing the example with the actual ending you want. Small spelling differences and different endings are separate candidates. WhoisFind combines registration and DNS signals where available, but a source can time out or restrict access. An unknown result should stay unknown rather than be recast as available.

For tests and documentation, example.com and related names are reserved by IANA; they are not ordinary shopping candidates.

Interpret registration evidence

RDAP is the standard registration-data service for generic top-level domains; some other endings may use WHOIS. A registration record is stronger evidence of existing registration than a working website. No response, however, can also reflect a temporary provider failure. Check the source and timing of a result when possible.

A listed expiration date does not guarantee that the domain becomes purchasable on that date. Renewal, grace, redemption, and pending-delete stages can intervene, and rules vary by ending.

Confirm before committing

If the candidate appears available, open a reputable registrar and check its live cart and registration terms. Verify the exact spelling, renewal cost, supported characters, and any special eligibility rules. Availability may change between your first check and checkout. A paid order is complete only when the registrar confirms the registration.

If the name is taken, compare clear alternatives instead of relying on a potentially misleading spelling. The choice guide helps weigh those options.
