How to Choose Short Domain Names Without Losing Meaning
Compare length, spelling, pronunciation and registration costs instead of choosing the fewest letters at any price.

A short domain is useful when someone can hear it, remember it and type it correctly. Removing vowels or adding arbitrary letters can reduce length while making the name harder to use. There is no single best length for every business, and a short address alone does not guarantee search rankings. Aim for a small shortlist of clear names, not the shortest string available.
Measure the right part of the address
When comparing length, look at the name before the extension. In example.com, the name is example and the extension is .com. Choose a name that is easy to read and type.
Use three small usability tests
Say the name once to someone who has not seen it and ask them to write it. Later, ask what they remember. Finally, show it on a phone and in an email address to check readability. Compare the illustrative labels clearname and clrnme: fewer letters do not automatically make the second easier to spell. These are spelling examples, not claims that any matching domain is available.
Put real constraints in the prompt
State the audience and naming language before setting a length. For a tarot learning product, “English names containing tarot, only .com, at most 12 letters before the extension” leaves room for a meaningful word. If you insist on tarot and five letters, there is no room for another word. If the candidates are taken, reconsider one constraint rather than accepting a chain of filler words or misspellings.
Choose from checked candidates
Compare a few understandable names against the same criteria: pronunciation, memorability, relevance and full address. Check current registration availability and the time of the result. A different extension is a separate registration, with its own price and rules; compare renewal costs as well as the first year. Confirm the final name with a registrar and review existing brands. An available domain is neither a reservation nor trademark clearance.
